Team EaSE Article: SEO, Joomla! and your Template
Many people ask “Is Joomla! good for SEO or not?” and a final answer is: “Yes it is!”. Joomla! is the ideal software with which you can build any website: business, corporate, education, government, portals etc. At the same time it is one of the easiest content management systems to set up, for many reasons, and good for the purpose of better rankings in search engines too.

On-page optimisation

SEO is not just an on-page process. It is an organic process which should start from keyword research (terms and phrases), building a search engine friendly web site and building links. What is most important from these three? All three.

Building a search engine friendly website is very important. As any website, Joomla! needs a good template, robot.txt file, sitemap, SEF URLs and body tags.

Learning how search engines work is a long process, but here are some fast-track guidelines for on-page SEO steps

A Web Page can be considered SEO friendly if it has:

  • meta description (max 150 characters)
  • good architecture
  • link to the home page
  • breadcrumbs
  • category or/and section link
  • title with H1 tag, with keyword or phrase (title tag max 70 characters)
  • subtitles with keywords or phrases
  • great ratio text to code
  • content (article) which is near to the closing head tag
  • unique content
  • proper name of images, with alt attribute and folder name
  • a few instances of keywords and/or phrases in the article (heading, alt, bold, italic)
  • speed and no more then 150 kb
  • low number of CSS and javascript compressed files

Before search engines crawl a website, they will first try to find the .htaccess and robot.txt files.

Definitive Guide for Joomla + VirtueMart + JoomFish Multilanguage Shop

Definitive Guide for Joomla + VirtueMart + JoomFish Multilanguage Shop

If you want to have a multilanguage shop, you need to do several things.

1. You must have version of Joomla! 1.0.12 – download from www.joomla.org
2. You must have installed VirtueMart 1.0.9 – download from www.virtuemart.net
3. You must have installed Joom!Fish 1.7 Stable – download it from www.joomfish.net
[NOTE] – Even Joom!Fish contains bots and module, it is installed at ONCE as a component. Please verify before install that your mambots/system folder has permitions to write in.
4. Install the languages you want to use in your Joomla! – Find all available languages by clicking here.
5. Add the VirtueMart Translations you are going to use in administrator/components/com_virtuemart/languages
6. Configure the languages in Joom!Fish in the standard way. Look at www.joomfish.net if you experience problems.
7. Add your products in the normal way in VirtueMart
8.1. Add to the folder administrator/components/com_joomfish/contentelements/ the files, that you should download by CLICKING HERE. You can upload those files easy with the Joom!Fish Content Element Installer. Get it from here and upload the files one by one and NOT AS ZIP.
8.2.Alternative way is to install the attached file as component. It will self remove itself and the installation will give back an error. Don’t worry, this should be exacly in this way.

Keep in mind that you need to do either 8.1 or 8.2 and not both of them.

9. Open the translation feature of Joom!Fish. Choose, what to translate from the dropdown and start translating the products, manufacturers, whatever.
10. Publish the translations.

That is it.

Edit on 13 January: Updating the thread with new versions and adding the self-adding support component.

How to include modules in Content & articles for Joomla

How to include modules in Content item (for Joomla 1.5.x)

Step 1: Set up the module

Let’s first create a module for use with this example.

  1. Go to “Extensions – Module Manager”. Look for the module “Main Menu”. Check the box besides the title, and choose “Copy” from the menu.
  2. You will see a new module called “Copy of Main Menu” appearing below the original “Main Meu”.
  3. Click on “Copy of Main Menu”. First make sure Enabled is set at ‘Yes’.
  4. Now, for the field “Position”, first take a look at the entire list of the module positions in the pulldown menu. Then choose a new module name and just type it in there. Yes, just manually type it in, since it will not be in the pulldown selection list. This is a combobox that allows you to add new items by typing the new item in the entry field. In this example, I’ve chosen the new module name to be user201 as shown below..
  5. In the field “Menu Assignment”, for Menus, make sure you select “All”:
  6. Save the module.

Step 2: Create the content page

We will now create a content item for containing the module.

  1. Go to Article Manager and create a new article.
  2. In the article, enter the following:
  3. This is a test to include a module inside a content page.

    {loadposition user201}
  4. Note that the module name after loadposition has to match the module position you have created in Step 1.
  5. That’s it! Save the article. We’re all set!
